Need ID
This bird, a new one for me, was in the garden this afternoon. I've looked through my books but can't seem to find out what it is. If anyone can help with identifying this bird I would appreciate it. He's a fair size, bigger than the normal sparrow but smaller than a blue jay, if that helps. Also the blush of pink on his breast should help.

A would say a grosbeak of some sort, how about a rose breasted grosbeak?
Further ... in my book it looks like an immature female but it doesn't look anything like the bird sites I've since checked out. It'll be interesting to see what it really is.
Cicero, I thought like you that it might be a rose breasted grosbeak but it doesn't look a lot like the pictures in my books. Thanks for trying.
OldCrow, I believe it is a rose breasted grosbeak female. Very drab compared to the males. If you google images you may be able to compare.

Hi OC, It is a RBG you can sex immatures by watching them as they take off or in flight. Males have rose pink armpits, the females have yellowy. As yours has pink on the chest I would think it to be a male?

....oh! What a sweet little Rose-breasted Grosbeak in his winter plumage. I love these little birds. They have beautiful songs in the spring.
I understand your joy in finding a new bird. I saw a red start in my garden-a visitor from the hills of India.
