June 18th., 2008

Still no sun to be seen but heigh ho, one must go on. It's warmed up considerable though and the black flies make it near impossible to work outside. Still, I did get a few things done coming in with a few bites.

A very nice person came by yesterday with a pile of net bags that I can use to pack with food for the birds. Must be a hundred or more, all on a rack so all I have to do is slip one off as needed. I filled two of the bags this morning.

Jay on one.

Minutes later, Mr. Crow has it just about finished off.

Beautiful colours on Blue Jay.

Poppy bud.

I never thought of using those net bags as bird feeders ... I've saved a few ... now they just might have a purpose.

BR, you can't help but love the old crows, lol.
Tricia, the jays certainly are lovely, cheeky too.
Cicero, I find it's a great idea, they get cleaned out pretty fast.

What do you use to fill your net bags for the birds? It sounds as if that may be the ticket for around here. We have acquired a raccoon that comes by at dusk and fills his little tummy from the feeders and then drinks the hummer juice dll gone as a chaser. What was I thinking, it wouldn't help because I know as well as the next person those pesky critters can climb. Any suggestions?

Hi Jo. The net bags...I usually mix up oatmeal, you know, the kind used to make porridge, and bread crumbs. Then I go to the pantry and see what I have like raisins, nuts, bits of fruit if any on hand, basically anything I think the birds might like. Then I put some oil or melted butter in the mixture, add a bit of water so that it all binds together, then stuff the bag. All the birds love it. We don't have raccoons here on the island so I don't know what to suggest.
