In Memory of a Friend

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there.
I do not sleep

I am a thousand winds that swiftly blow.
I am the diamond glint
on newly fallen snow.
I am the sunlight
on ripened grain.
I am the soft and gentle autumn rain

When you wake from sleep in the early morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft, starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there.
I do not sleep.

This piece was just read at a memorial service I also read at this past Sunday.

It has attributed to writer, Mary Elizabeth Frye (1905-2004), but authorship has also been claimed by Karin Aleida Schmidt-Vorrink.

A summary on the research as to who the true author is can be found here: http://www.businessballs.com/donotstandatmygraveandweep.htm

The first time I heard this piece, it was introduced as a traditional Indian poem that had been retranslated several times.

After reading the summary, I'm leaning towards Mary Elizabeth Frye as the true author.

Thanks for posting it. Old Crow. :-)

Thanks for the information Joseph. To be honest I didn't know who wrote it but always loved it.
